Herman Pekel

Herman Pekel was born in 1956 in Victoria and is an acclaimed Australian artist. Herman began painting from a young age and was influenced by his teachers Roger Webber, Ernest Buckmaster and Lance McNeill who were primarily oil painters.

Herman utilised his early painting knowledge and thereby refined his own painting style by focusing on subject matter. Herman did this by painting ‘on location’, capturing real moments in time and transporting them onto the canvas, initially using oil paints. Herman’s clear passion for painting was reflected in his first sell-out exhibition in Melbourne, which he did when he was only 17 years old.

In addition, Herman also holds a Fine Arts degree from RMIT University in Melbourne.

The artistic style of Herman Pekel has evolved from his early experimentation with abstract impressionism to his signature modern impressionism style, which he executes with oil paints, watercolours and gouache.

Herman’s works can be defined not only by his adaptation of the subject matter he paints but also through his seamless blending of both colour and texture on the canvas. Herman’s modern impressionism, although in the realm of realism, is still so unique as his style of painting appears to be almost ‘melting’ off the canvas whilst still incorporating an incredible amount of detail.

Herman has exhibited his works throughout Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Taiwan.

He is a multi-award winning artist, winning the Camberwell Rotary Watercolour prize in 1993, the Camberwell Rotary Art Show’s Best Oil in 2004, the Camberwell Rotary Watercolour prize in 1989, 1993, 1995 and 2006, the Camberwell Rotary Travel Scholarship in 1989 and in 1989 and in 1993 he won the Alice Bale Award.
